Handpump Workshop Project Manager
VSO       Lusaka  Zambia

From July 1991 to June 1994, I worked as a VSO volunteer at the Makeni Ecumenical Centre on the outskirts of Lusaka, the Zambian Capital.
I was the founding project manager of a self-funding handpump production workshop at  the Makeni Ecumenical Centre in Lusaka, Zambia.

Established as a small business, the workshop manufactured, sold and installed a range of handpumps including the Rower Pump and the India Mk 2/3 handpump.

Experience gained included:
  • Project management of a water engineering  business in a developing country
  • Installation, repair and manufacture of a wide range of handpumps
  • Training and developing skills of workshop staff to manage project
  • Contract work repairing diesel/electric pumps and using simple (Vonder) drill rig
  • Marketing and promoting products in Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe
  • Liasing with Govt reps, Aid Agencies, NGOs and Church organisation
  • Supervising the installation of over 300 pumps throughout Zambia

Unfortunately I do not have many photos (in electronic form) at the moment of Zambia - although here is a photo of the church in the Makeni Ecumenical Centre:
